Today we’d like to introduce you to John Toti.
John, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
This whole journey started at 20 yrs old when I noticed my hair was thinning. I was in denial constantly looking in the mirror all the time in every which way possible hoping it was just the light. But the denial became reality when some girl I met made a comment about my hair loss! After that I wore a hat everywhere, avoiding every and any situation hats weren’t allowed.
After years of the hat, I felt there’s got to be a better solution. I researched every and any solution but none of them were realistic. Then one day I saw an article about scalp micro pigmentation becoming a new solution for hair loss.By already being in the tattoo industry I had the skills, though this was much more of a cosmetic treatment I found a trainer and learned the cosmetic/medical side of Permanent Cosmetics.
After months of training and successfully working on 5 models, l became the First licensed/certified scalp micro pigmentation technician in New England.
With a lot of confidence in my skills, I worked on and completed my own head!!! Looking in the mirror with a hairline was the most incredible feeling!! I took back my Confidence!! That’s when I decided I was going to start my own company, I knew by far this was the best solution for hair loss and so I wanted to help other men and women who felt hostage to always wearing hats, and free them from the daily maintenance of using cover up concealers such as toppikk, hairpiece’s, wigs and multiple failed transplant’s!!
Has it been a smooth road?
I knew Scalp micro pigmentation (SMP) was a game changer and no one else was doing it in New England. But this was my first time starting a business without any prior experience in marketing which is one of the most important jobs I literally googled how to market a business. I had some help from the women who trained me by giving me the basic knowledge of what I needed for my shop, I watched a ton of YouTube video from how to create an email to creating my first AdWords campaign.
The decision to quit my job before I was making any money was really tough but it was a chance I had to take I believed as long as I learned how to market that it was going to work out. The first year and a half were not easy, there was never a point in which I felt I was going to fail though there were many frustrating days alone in my office not understanding why the phone wasn’t ringing. I went town to town handing out postcards to every barbershop/hair salon in the city.
I also reached out to hair transplant doctor’s which I believe after the 4th time emailing a doctor he finally reached out to me. We had a meeting and after that, I started working (as an independent contractor) at a hair transplant company performing SMP on their clients. I gained so much knowledge working which benefited me in the growth of my own business. After a couple years I had so many clients calling me that I no longer needed to work anywhere else but my own shop.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the SCALP DESIGNS story. Tell us more about the business.
Scalp Designs performs a Cutting Edge Hair loss Solution called Scalp Micro Pigmentation. Guaranteed to give Men/Women back a full looking head of hair. This is a Non-Surgical Treatment in which organic pigments that replicate hair follicles are inserted into bald and receding areas creating a closely cropped buzz cut look for men with little to no hair. By adding pigments on the scalp of thinning areas on clients with hair creates a thicker look for your year since people no longer see your scalp and the way the pigments are inserted created an illusion of hair.
We also conceal scars whether it’s a hair transplant or accidental scar. We call this camouflaging scars.
By doing this we fill the scar with pigments so it looks as if there is no scar there anymore. We do this treatment a lot since hair transplants create scars in which the client becomes very insecure about.
Our conversions of turning consultations into clients is 98%!! I believe our success is a combination of thing’s from the consultant having SMP done by the Technician that’s going to work on them, (so they get to see a finished product), also half our clients have tried previous treatments such as transplants etc, so having the experience of working next to these doctor’s performing these treatments talking with clients and actually working in the hair loss industry.
Instead of being a tattoo artist or barber who starts providing SMP with no prior experience in the field definitely separates us from any other provider’s. It comes down to the client being comfortable enough to make the decision to do the treatment we talk with our clients about their previous treatments and most of the time we even can tell what doctor performed their treatment since we’ve worked with many different doctors and can identify their work.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
There’s no doubt we see our industry growing at a very fast rate. The amount of providers has already doubled over the past year. More Transplant doctors will be offering it through this is an art of cosmetic tattooing so unfortunately, I believe there will be many inexperienced technicians messing up many heads
