But these are very different situations, and they shouldn't all be treated the same way. The goal of a professional SMP consultation isn't simply to determine whether SMP can be performed. SMP can be used for male pattern baldness, receding hairlines, bald crowns, diffuse thinning, female pattern hair loss, thinning edges and sides, traction alopecia, certain forms of alopecia, hair transplant density, and FUE or FUT transplant scars. The important thing to understand is that SMP does not regrow hair. Someone with advanced baldness may achieve their best result by recreating the appearance of a full, closely shaved head, while someone with existing thinning hair may benefit from SMP placed between their natural follicles to reduce visible scalp and create greater visual density. The goal is to use SMP to strengthen what you already have, not to make pigment compete visually with longer hair.

Can SMP Help Women With Thinning Hair?

Yes. Scalp micropigmentation can be extremely effective for women experiencing thinning hair, but the treatment is usually approached very differently from SMP performed on a completely shaved scalp. Most women aren't looking to recreate a shaved head. The goal is typically to reduce the amount of visible scalp showing through their existing hair, making the hair appear fuller and denser. Women's density SMP can be used for areas such as: A widening part Thinning through the crown Diffuse thinning Thinning temples and sides Receding edges Traction-related hair loss The existing hair is extremely important because SMP is placed between the natural follicles and works visually with the hair that's already there. Depending on how much hair remains, SMP can be placed between the existing follicles to reduce visible scalp and create the appearance of greater density. In more advanced cases where portions of the hairline or edges have been permanently lost, SMP can also be used to carefully recreate the appearance of follicles and restore visual structure to those areas. However, every case is different. The amount of remaining hair, the location of the loss, the condition of the scalp, and how the client normally wears their hair all affect what can realistically be achieved. However, expectations are important. SMP is still creating the appearance of follicles at scalp level—it is not creating additional strands of longer hair. Can SMP Camouflage FUT and FUE Hair Transplant Scars?

With an FUT (strip) transplant, a linear scar may remain across the donor area on the back of the scalp.
