Scalp Micropigmentation vs. Hair Transplant Surgery – Which Is Better?

Hair transplant surgery is the most popular solution for hair loss. But there is a new treatment for hair loss that is making a lot of waves lately, called as Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) or Hair Tattoo.
The question is which is better for you – SMP for Hair Loss or Hair Transplant Surgery. At Scalp Designs, we believe that Scalp Micropigmentation is the most effective solution for hair loss, and certainly a better option than hair transplants.

Here’s why…

The Problem with Hair Transplant Surgery…
What is Hair Transplant Surgery?

Hair transplant surgery is a very complex procedure where hair that you already have is moved and transplanted to an area of your scalp which has thinning hair or no hair. On the plus side, hair transplant surgery is long lasting and could result in the re-growth of natural hair.
But there are many issues with Hair Transplant Surgery.

#1: The surgery can cost you anything from $12,000 to $15,000, which is a lot!
#2: It works only if you have transferable hair on other areas of your scalp.
#3: Many patients complain about a constant irritation such as itching after the surgery.
#4: There is no 100% guarantee that it will work for you. The transplanted hair may fall off later.
#5: Having to be on Propecia, a drug prescribed so transplanted hair won’t fall out, the #1 Side Affect being “Impotence”

Why Opt for SMP for Hair Loss?
At Scalp Designs, we have a team of skilled professionals that perform Scalp Micropigmentation using a highly technical and intricate process. SMP involves implanting natural pigments giving you the appearance of having a full head of shaved hair.
This treatment works very well for both men and women at any stage of hair loss, and has grown in popularity in recent years.
In fact, if you’ve noticed why the likes of Vin Diesel and Jamie Foxx (two of our favorite actors) have been looking much younger lately, that’s because they are a part of the new wave of celebs that have opted for SMP rather than for a hair transplant surgery.
This approach to fighting hair loss creates an illusion of a full head with a 3-day stubble, instead of a chrome dome look. It makes it appear as though the individual has willingly chosen to shave their head and not really suffered from hair loss.

How does Scalp Micropigmentation work?

Basically it involves the careful and methodical application of a special medical-grade pigment using micro-needles onto the scalp. This is also called cosmetic tattooing.

What about the results?

You should only trust experts such as those from Scalp Designs with this procedure. The results will depend on the person that performs the SMP. This is a non-invasive process, which not only helps cover the hair loss or hair thinning, but also allows you to conceal the bald spots, burns and scars on the scalp.
Once done, the results will remain for 10-15 years before a touch up may be needed. There are no serious side effects and while you may experience some minor discomfort during the process, it is nothing to worry about.
There is no risk of infection from the incision of the needles. Scalp Designs equipment used is sterile one time use only. You don’t need to take any medications either. Also, this treatment is 100% guaranteed to produce the expected results, which is not possible with any other treatment for hair loss.

Finally…

Scalp Micropigmentation costs $1,500 to $3,000, which is a fraction of what a hair transplant surgery would cost you. It requires no maintenance or touch-ups and is the best way to hide a receding hairline.

Hair transplants are often given as the only way to treat hair loss and for the expense, the results can be generally lacklustre. Huge strides have been made in the procedure to ensure a higher quality of hair regrowth and less scarring however the pictures you see with people that seem to have a full natural head of hair are ultimately false as it usually takes several sessions over a few years.

In cases of male pattern baldness where the hair is lost from the crown and the temples, it can only be replaced using a small doner strip from the back of the head. This means that there is a limited amount of follicles that can be transferred or moved to the affected areas, so in most cases you will be left with a patchy new hairline that is only a semi improvement.

It would be worthwhile if the results are guaranteed but your surgeon is unable to tell whether the body will reject these new follicles in their relocated position plus if you are experiencing total hair loss then you won’t have enough donor hair to replace the full scalp.

This is where scalp micropigmentation can be of great use and help. It is more than just a tattoo, it works to reduce the appearance of of the scalp in conjunction with hair transplants.

Scalp micropigmentation can be used pre-or post hair transplant. When used after a hair transplant it has two main focuses.

  • Firstly it will fill in any gaps and create a shadowy effect to make the hair look more dense and realistic.

  • Secondly it can be use as a method to disguise any scarring that occurred during the process especially at the back of the head where the donor hair was taken from.

Hair transplants can take up to 12 months to heal and so we suggest leaving this time between the operation and having your first scalp micro pigmentation treatment just to allow the hair and scalp to settle and to see how if any new growth is occurring.

We also suggest that you do not have another operation until three months after you’ve had your last scalp micro pigmentation session.

We suggest having the micropigmentation done before you consider any hair transplant because often people are shocked to see their results and are glad to be able to continue life with even the semblance of hair. However, if you do decide to go on to have a transplant we have a recommended specialist who we work very closely with. Plus, because you have already essentially filled in the area, when you then go and have the hair implanted, you will already look like you have fuller hair.

The reason that scalp micro pigmentation has become so popular compared to hair transplants is that the results are guaranteed beforehand. During a consultation, your technician will be able to show clearly the expected results and the healing time is minimal. So for the fraction of the cost of a hair transplant and the recovery time, you can take out all of the guesswork and know exactly what the outcome will be.
