So Bosley Now Offers Scalp Micropigmentation – But Is It Worth It?

You heard that right, Bosley now offers scalp micropigmentation. Welcome to the party Bosley, you’re late as usual. At Scalp Designs, the leading SMP clinic in New England, we welcome competition.

We like that hair restoration companies such as Bosley, which have always ignored scalp micropigmentation, have suddenly realized that it is the best thing in the world.

I am John Toti, the owner and lead technician at Scalp Designs, a professional scalp micropigmentation clinic based in Stoughton, MA that serves the New England area.

I am the first licensed and certified SMP technician in New England. I wanted to talk about one of my pet peeves, Bosley, who are exactly the sort of company that bring a bad name to our profession.

Who are Bosley?

Bosley is a hair restoration company founded by L. Lee Bosley in 1974. They claim to be the leading provider or hair restoration services in the world. They say they have performed more than 250,000 hair restoration procedures over the last 40 years.

They say they are the “world’s most experienced hair restoration expert” with state-of-the-art clinical care facilities that provide you with the natural solutions that you’re looking for.

Okay. Take everything you hear from Bosley with a pinch of salt.

As someone who has worked in the hair restoration business for years, I know for a fact that Bosley have always overpriced people with their bad hair restorations and hairpieces, that actually make things worse than before.

This is a company that always hires amateurs as technicians and charge big money based on their brand name. No self-respecting hair restoration expert would work for Bosley.

When you hire amateurs, you are always going to get poor results and that’s almost always the case with Bosley.

It’s funny that they have decided to offer scalp micropigmentation now, having failed with everything else they have done so far. And there is no question in my mind that they are going to overcharge for every SMP procedure, just as they do for their hair transplants.

It’s not just me who says this. Ask any hair restoration technician. Or better, ask the customers – people who went to Bosley for help with their hair loss issues.

Just read the reviews of Bosley by real customers on the internet. Many claim that Bosley’s hair transplantation caused scarring and was more invasive than was promised to them before the procedure.

Here’s one dissatisfied customer from Pennsylvania who tried out the Bosley’s hair restoration program saying exactly what he thinks about them:

“In July it will be 2 years since I had my transplant. I have written to their corporate office in Beverly Hills and their response was always to send me back to Dr Cornwell (who is arrogant) at the Philly office where I had it done and always received the same answer.

“Give it time. Well it hasn’t grown in like they said. I still have a long bald spot on the top of my head. It cost me $8000.

“They guaranteed me that if the hair fell out they would redo it.

“They haven’t done that and they seem to be refusing to do so. This doesn’t work so don’t do it.”

Here’s another customer review of Bosley’s hair restoration methods from Yelp:

“I wanted my hairline back so I went to Bosley believing they’re the best in the industry. Went in for the consultation and everything seemed kosher. When I went in for the procedure I told the doctor how I wanted my hairline and he kept insisting that I let him do it the way he knows it would look best and more natural.

“His assistant agreed with him so I trusted their recommendation and got convinced that the hairline I envisioned was all wrong…that it wouldn’t look natural. When you’re sitting in a high rise building in a beautiful office with intelligent looking doctors that have been doing transplants for years and they tell you that they know what to do and the assistant is in agreement of course you’re going to trust their recommendation…

“BIG MISTAKE… $7,500.00 (seven THOUSAND five HUNDRED) later…and I’ve still got people asking me about my receding hairline… and a scar on the back of my head… 20% of the plugs didn’t take root… and their stern “RECOMMENDATION” for how I should allow them to “be the artist” and let them make it look natural was a complete disaster. Had the doctor of allowed me to decide on where my hair line goes I think this procedure would have worked just fine. Now I’m left with a hairline that looks receding still and I feel cheated out of $7,500.00.”

Here’s more: A non-profit website BosleyMedicalViolations.com claims that “Bosley has been the subject of numerous patient complaints, lawsuits, and violations relating to their advertising, medical procedures, and business practices.”

The most common customer complaints made against Bosley is that their hair transplantation procedure was more intensive than advertised, often leading to excessive scarring and scalp numbness.

Further, the company routinely misleads customers on how much they charge for their hair restoration procedures.

While they officially claim to charge between $4,000 to $12,000, the truth is they add a lot of hidden charges and the average cost of their procedures is somewhere between $10,000 to $20,000.

In addition to that, customers are expected to pay an extra $500 or $1000 as a “room reservation fee!”

Again, it’s good that Bosley has now realized the effectiveness of SMP for hair loss and the growing popularity of this technique. But if you want to undergo the scalp micropigmentation treatment for your hair loss or baldness in New England, trust only the experts: trust Scalp Designs, not Bosley!
